@apthorpe
Awesome, you should definitely come by for a meeting soon, and I'll add you to my mental list of people to contact when I do my next melt. I just bought the Gingery book series a few days ago, but I'd love to peruse your casting books (or anything from Lindsay, it's all interesting).

I've been meaning to drop in at PS:One but now you've sealed it. Before I moved to Chicago a year ago I was in the process of building a small charcoal-fired foundry to cast parts for a Gingery lathe. I had much of the form completed as well as a few sacks of castable refractory and sand for green sand casting (not quite to the point of having a muller or Petrobond or any other sand-conditioning stuff.) Then I moved from a house into an apartment and shelved the project because molten aluminum is not an indoor toy.
That said, I've got a dozen books on sand casting, furnace and burner design, pattern making, plus a crapload of projects but sadly no place to work. As soon as I can unpack my library, I'll try to drop by and say howdy.
Also, if you're not familiar with Lindsay Publications you need to check them out. A few recommendations: Steve Chastain's series on metal casting, Dave Gingery's famous series "How to Build A Metal Shop From Scrap," and Michael Porter's "Gas Burners for Forges, Furnaces & Kilns."
