Lightning Talks at Pumping Station: One

A new format for Pumping Station: One–lightning talks. One subject, five minutes. Go!

On Tuesday, we had our first round of lightning talks immediately following the general meeting. I opened with Lightning Talks 101: Recursive Talk is Recursive, then Sasha gave a preview of his speed reading class, and five other folks followed, with talks that varied from one on WordPress sidejacking and another about hard drive disposal to a promo of an in-person networking event and another about building a new social network.
Join us after next week’s meeting for more off-the-cuff info-sharing in lightning talk mode.

Hackathon++

Hackathon_feel_the_noiseThis month we are going the extra mile to fulfill your hackathon
cravings.  We will be hosting two consecutive weekends of mischief and
machinations starting with Saturday night @ 8:00 PM.

Hackathon: Come On, Feel The Noise
is now our louder, messier counterpart that’s equal parts sawdust,
sparks & dance music.  Some of our own members will be on hand
DJing the event as well as the ‘Cacophony Club’ getting together to
demo their homebrew instruments.

We are also especially pleased to announce that hackerspaces from across the US and Europe will be joining us throughout the weekend in holding their own all-night events, making this a Synchronous Hackathon.  We and many other spaces will be hosting live feeds on Ustream that will be publicly available to view.

Next weekend will be the classic unplugged version of Hackathon: Quiet Riot.
As the name suggests, distractions will be at a minimum and the
emphasis is on coding of various types.  Pick your poison or join us
for both if you’re so inclined.  Our live stream is up and running
around the clock for the most part (below).

See you this weekend along with CCCKC, Alpha One Labs, Makers Local 256, FAMiLab, Freeside Atlanta, Syn2cat, Hackerspace Barcelona, Hive13, InitLab, Kwartzlab, TOG & Tetalab!

Physics Simulations in Flash

sim2In a previous job, I made flash apps to accompany math textbooks that helped kids learn things
like trig functions and integrations by showing them visual
representations of what they were doing. After a while, I started making some apps on the side and ended up with this
physics simulator.

This app is at times a gravity
simulation and at others electricity and magnetism.
Basically, you can place “wells” that vary from being very
attractive to very repellent, and then release “particles” into
this system that you have just created. The system operates on a
very simple set of rules; the closer a particle is to a well, the
stronger the force it feels from that well. This led to fairly
simple and straightforward code that reached the desired result. In
addition, I added in the ability for the particles to trace the path
they have taken which allows you to see if the particles are entering
into repetitive orbits and draw pretty, pretty pictures. The actual
app is located here with the directions to run the simulation on the
page as well. Enjoy!

Memes class at IIA this Thursday!

IMMA_CHARGIN_MAH_LAZER_4Are you charging your lazors? No? Would you like to? Then stop by Illinois Institute of Art this Thursday, November the 19th at 7 o’clock in room 213 for a crash course in internet memes, taught by PS:One members Jim Burke and Eli Skipp. The hour long class will go over what memes are, the history of memes, the origin of the term, and everything else you could ever possibly want to know. Free pizza, free knowledge.

Note: as internet memes are constantly being invented, rising, and falling again into obscurity, this will be the first installment in a series of classes.

Address, times, etc. are listed on the calendar to the right!

Pumping Station: One is part of Something New!

IMG_0344Exciting event: tomorrow, Wednesday, November 11th, Pumping Station: One is participating in Chicago’s Something New roving art show. What does this mean? This means that PS:One will be open to the public (even more so than usual!) so that everyone can come see the constantly in-flux work of art that is Pumping Station: One. Projects will be on display, music may or may not be playing, and the whole place will be yours to peruse. Come and support us in our first officially artistic event this Wednesday! (and if the show inspires you, come to our Feel the Noise Hackathon the third Saturday of this month and get your make on).
