PS:One is proud and delighted (and working tirelessly) to be a host of Mini Maker Faire Evanston on August 4 and 5!

Tickets are on sale now at MakerFaireEvanston.com.

We’ll be there running a booth (…and several members will have individual booths), hosting our regional hackerspace friends, the Power Racing Series races, and general volunteer work.

We hope you’ll all come take a look around the Faire, visit us, and say hello!

N00b’s Paradise

Update: wow! Thanks to the 38 people who showed up on five days’ notice! I really didn’t expect that many folks to show. Here is a link to my notes (I’ve added a little more based on our discussion).

Original post:

Are you new around here?

There’s nothing wrong with that, and you’re hardly alone.

PS:One has seen explosive growth in the past year or so, and it’s becoming increasingly obvious that we need a formal way of teaching new folk how to be a healthy, happy member of PS:One.

Meet with PS:One old-timers (including at least one former president) to learn the many opportunities available to PS:One members, plus hacks for getting around easier.

You’ll learn:

  • the one and only rule you need to remember at PS:One!
  • what mailing lists and IRC channels you should join
  • how to get discounts on classes, tee-shirts, stuff around town, and even monthly dues!
  • how to get certified on equipment
  • how to bring new equipment into PS:One
  • how to create a class, event, group, meeting, or what have you
  • how to request a class, event, group, whatever
  • how to blog
  • the wiki: WTF is that about?
  • do-ocracy and how to do-ocratize things

The basics:

  • Who: anyone who wants to learn how PS:One works
  • When: Wednesday July 25th, 7:30 pm
  • Where: PS:One 1st floor lounge
  • Cost: free

Learn programming with Python Office Hours

There are loads of people who want to learn how to program, and thankfully there are loads of high quality free tutorials and classes from big names like MIT (the class a small group of us are currently using), Stanford, and Google, from start-up educational resources like Khan Academy or Udacity, and other free resources like Python-course.

All of the courses listed above teach the easy-to-learn Python programming language.

Starting Thursday, May 17th, every first and third Thursday of each month PS:One will hold Python Office Hours.  This is a chance for people learning to program in Python to get together for moral support, project assistance, and homework assistance.  We’ll have an experienced python developer or two on hand to help answer questions and explain difficult concepts, plus loads of students at all skill levels to provide assistance and community (there is no better way to learn than teaching!).

This is an “office hours” event with volunteer teaching assistants. The expectation is that students watch lectures, read tutorials and attempt homework on their own, then use this as a resource to aid in learning, not as a class, workshop, seminar, private tutor session, or other primary learning tool.

  • Who: everyone is welcome, regardless of skill level!
  • When: First and Third Thursdays of each month, 7pm, starting May 17
  • Where: Pumping Station: One 3354 N. Elston Ave, Chicago, IL
  • Cost: Free ($5 recommended donation to help us keep the lights on!)

PS: in lieu of apples, our TAs prefer adult beverages as thank-you presents.
