NERP Tonight: QT and Steppers

 

Tonight at NERP, we’ll have a show and tell about the PS:1 entry in the Element14 hackerspace challenge.(http://www.element14.com/community/community/knode/single-board_computers/next-gen_beaglebone/blog/2013/06/12/beaglebone-black–the-2013-hackerspace-challenge/)We’ll highlight use of the QT framework and gui tools on the Beagle Bone Black to run the stepper motors on the pick and place machine. There are always challenges in getting a new platform up. One challenge has been resolving version problems with the QT3 to QT4 transition on ARM. We’ll find out how that’s going. Also we’ll also have a tour of the system’s Z- and θ- axes mechanism and find out what the test results were on using some very small stepper motors to drive the head. As a bit of improvisational comedy, some of the tests will be done live during NERP! Yow!

NERP: Retro DOS Gaming on the Raspberry Pi, and a Hackerspace Challenge Update

Tonight at NERP,  Jay Hopkins will show us some how to set up an MSDOS emulator and use it to run 8-bit games. Bleep.

Ed will talk about the status of PS:1’s project for the Element14 Hackerspace challenge. While amusing, entertaining, and informative, the update will also be a pitch for anyone who is interested in the technologies to help PS:1 compete for the big prize.

Programming in Erlang -plus- Making an Xbox Media Center on the Raspberry Pi

Tonight at NERP, we’ll have two presentations.

Brian Chamberlan will tell us about using Erlang to program/control the RaspberryPI/BeagleBone. Erlang is a functional, general-purpose concurrent, programming language and runtime system. Erlang provides language-level features for creating and managing processes with the aim of simplifying concurrent programming. Processes communicate using message passing instead of shared variables, which removes the need for locks. [paraphrased from wikipedia]

Michael Beck will show us how to set up Xbox Media Center, XBMC on the Raspberry Pi. Pretty much every possible mode of interacting with a digital media stream is supported by XBMC. The Raspberry Pi’s excellent (but proprietary) video rendering hardware makes it an ideal platform for building a home media center.

We’ve been wondering what it’s like to work with the new Raspberry Pi camera module. Tonight we’re in luck. Craig LeMoyne has a Raspberry Pi project he’ll show us tonight. In his words:

“I have an RPi Model A in my basement running Apache2 and taking pictures
using the new Camera Module every few seconds of a wet area that I *hopefully* managed to patch. It is good fun, and I can also do timelapse video from the pictures. The Pi will even compile the timelapse for me!”

Drew Fustini will introduce us to programming the Beagle Bone Black in BoneScript.
I’ve been saying for years that Javascript would be the next hot language for microcontrollers – maybe it’s true. From beagleboard.org/Support/BoneScript

NERP Tonight! FPGA’s with Ste

NERP is not exclusively raspberry pi, the small computer interest group at Pumping Station:One in Chicago.

Ste Kulov (like “steve” without the “ve”) is the signal processing guru of Pumping Station:One. He’s also a great teacher who’s enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge of the theory and practice of analog and digital circuit design. Tonight Ste will show NERP what FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) chips do and how to use the chip manufacturers’ development tools.

FPGA’s are very fast logic chips that can perform better than microprocessor CPU’s in a number of high throughput applications. FPGA’s are programmable, but FPGA programs aren’t necessarily seqences of instruction like a C program would be. In fact, on an FPGA you can “write” a CPU. All the cool kids are learning to use FPGA’s, and you should, too!

Tonight’s agenda from Ste:
1.) What are FPGAs & CPLDs and what do they do?
2.) Why would you want to use one?
3.) Explain how you would program one using a hardware description
language such as VHDL or Verilog.
4.) Go over a quick Verilog example & demo of displaying “NERP” on the
4-digit 7-segment display on my dev board.
5.) With the remaining time, demo off my Nintendo DS video output
project to illustrate the neat stuff you can do with these things.

NERP tonight with Drew: Beagle Bone and Pi Face

Tonight Drew Fustini will demo the Beagle Bone.

BeagleBone (http://beagleboard.org/bone) is an open source, low-cost
credit-card-sized Linux computer that connects with the Internet and runs
software such as Android 4.0 and Ubuntu.

BeagleBone is capable of interfacing to all of your robotics motor
drivers, location or pressure sensors and 2D or 3D cameras. It can also run
OpenCV, OpenNI and other image collection and analysis software.

Through HDMI, VGA or LCD expansion boards, it is capable of decoding and
displaying mutliple video formats utilizing a completely open source software
stack and synchronizing playback over Ethernet or USB with other BeagleBoards.

Drew will also hit the high points of a Raspberry Pi interface board called the
Pi Face (http://pi.cs.man.ac.uk/interface.htm)

Pi-Face Digital is the first of a range of interfaces to allow the Raspberry Pi
to control and manipulate the real world. It allows the Raspberry Pi to read
switches connected to it – a door sensor or pressure pad perhaps, a microswitch
or reed switch, or a hand held button. With appropriate easy to write code, the
Raspberry Pi then drives outputs, powering motors, actuator, LEDs, light bulbs
or anything you can imagine to respond to the inputs.

Automation Night: Wednesday August 8 at 7pm

The second Wednesday of each month is our monthly Automation Night (AKA: DIY CNC night)!

Are you interested in automated manufacturing? Do you like the idea of owning your own 3D printer, laser cutter, automated mill, router table, or other automated tools? Then this is the night for you!

Automation Night is an ever-growing group of enthusiastic amateurs and professionals in the field of do it yourself automated manufacturing (ie 3D printers, CNC mills, laser cutters, cake frosters, etc) hardware and software.

Please come if you’re interested in learning more, already have an automated tool at home, want to show off your latest build, or just want to meet locals who are into this exciting technology!

  • Who: Open to the public

Circuits and Arduino (session 3) Sun. 3/18 12:30-2:30pm

Session 3 of the Circuits and Arduino class will meet Sun. 3/18. from 12:30-2:30pm. Session 3 will be Motors and Actuators part 1: Servos.

In session 2, we read analog sensor input into the Arduino, and had the Arduino print the data to a character display.  In session 3, we will read sensors with an Arduino, and then interpret the data to control the position of a servomotor. If you want to build an Arduino-controlled entity that has physical motion, this is a very good place to start.

I’ll have a small quantity of servos available for sale on Sunday for $12 ea. For class you will need only one servo, however there is the option to use more than that for your own experiments.

 

Who: everyone (members and non-members are welcome), seating is limited to 10 people. Reservations are preferred but not required.
Cost: $12 for a servo, unless you bring your own

Circuits and Arduino (session 2) 3/4/12 3pm

The second meeting of the Intro to Arduino Class will be Sunday March 4 at 3pm. There are 10 seats available, but observers are welcome after the 10 seats are filled. In the first meeting, we learned about soldering and reading circuit diagrams by making an Arduino work-alike from raw components and a blank proto-board.

In the second class we’ll

  • learn to use a breadboard for doing quick “sketches” with electronic parts.
  • use a pushbutton, a photoresistor, and a potentiometer to learn about providing inputs into an Arduino program.
  • use a serial data connection to communicate with a small LCD character display that can show two lines of text.
  • have a first look at ways of powering our circuit when it’s disconnected from the computer.

If you weren’t at the first meeting and therefore don’t have a copy of the board we made, you can still participate by bringing your own Arduino or Arduino-compatible.

The session-2 kit has a breadboard, LCD character display, heavy duty 5-volt adapter, and a couple of other things. If you attend, you should purchase the kit. Price for the session-2 kit is $29.00

I’ll take reservations by email and payment for the kit on site.

 That’s probably all that will fit in two hours. Last time we ran significantly overtime. This time, we’ll keep it to two hours.
