Crappy Robots Rise To Compete Once Again

Hey Hacky People,

The last crappy robot competition we ran (http://pumpingstationone.org/2015/01/the-dumbrobotcompetition-for-dummies/) went so well that we’ve decided to do it again. Bring your crappy ideas to the Chicago North Side Mini Maker Faire on Saturday, May 2, 2015. We’ll start competing at 14:00.

Sr. Abrazos (the unofficial mascot of crappy robots) dukes it out against Unilowbrow with its dukes up!

The Dumb Robot Competition for Dummies

This robot is so crappy! <3
Bioguy made a crappy robot for us!

Hey Hacky People,

I’m holding a crappy robot competition at the end of the month. This
competition is targeted at people who DON’T KNOW HOW TO BUILD ROBOTS!
😀

Inspired by HEBOCON in Japan: http://youtu.be/46ivFpsmEVQ , crappy
robot will be pitted against crappy robot in some type of sumo match.
Some will win, some will lose, some will fall apart before they even
enter the ring. Everyone will enjoy themselves!

Here’s the essential details you need to know:

Date: January 29, 2015 @ 19:00
Location: Pumping Station: One Electronics Lab
Register to compete at http://goo.gl/forms/XbZrvSLq97
Only the first 31 people to register will be allowed to
compete, so register early!

The full rules will be published some time before the competition
starts. Here’s the main things you need to know:

* Robots will compete inside a circular ring.
* The goal is to either knock the other robot over, or push it out of the ring.
* There will be a penalty for making your robot too high tech
(questions about this should be directed at the judges).
* If you’re playing to win, you’re missing the point! 🙂

Happy Hacking!

Edit: The rules can be found here! As always, they are subject to change.

Halloween Party

Pumping Station: One is having a Halloween Party! The theme for this party is: MONSTER MASH! Bring your best ghouls, wights, Frankensteins, wizards, and werewolves to celebrate the holiday with us.

The party will start at 20:00 on Saturday, November 1st. We’ll have some beer and food available, even a Pumpkin Ale which we will be brewing at PS:One this Sunday! If you want anything in particular, feel free to BYOB.

Entrance to the party is free, but a donation of $5 to support the hackerspace is suggested. While it’s not required, you can RSVP on the meetup group to let us know you’re coming.

(We would also really appreciate if anyone wants to come by Sunday morning to help with the cleanup.)

SIGBOT Meeting on Thursday

Hey Hackers,

In case hacking on robots is your thing, we’re going to be having a SIGBOT meeting this Thursday. SIGBOT is the Special Interest Group for Robotics. We build, program, and do just about anything to do with robotics.

At this Thursday’s meeting, I’m going to give a brief overview of the Quickbot (http://o-botics.org/robots/quickbot/mooc/v2/), a small mobile robotics platform designed for teaching people how to control mobile robots. I should have one there and put together for people to poke at if they want to.

The meeting is at 19:00 on September 18, 2014 up in the electronics lab of Pumping Station: One.

SIGBOT is starting tonight!

Hey everyone! We’re starting a new robotics group tonight at 19:00. SIGBOT is the Special Interest Group for Robotics. We’ll be meeting the 3rd Thursday of the month in the electronics lab at Pumping Station: One.

Tonight we’ll be talking about what this club will really be all about. I want to hear everyone’s ideas for projects we can work on as a group, and also what projects people are working on individually.

Hope to see you all there!
