And Then There Was Lightboxen!

In a quest for the perfect balance between cost-effective and high-detail screen printed productions, my first roadblock was to be able to make screens in a short amount of time with little mess.  Instructables and Make both suggest that for very little compromise in quality, you can build your own lightbox on the cheap.

The only problem is that information about ideal conditions for exposing screens is sparse and varying.  After about a year of lurking researching many different sources, it was time to build.  The total project materials cost came to about $75.00.

Monochrom Coming to Chicago

monochrom---vorsprung-durch-kulturtechnikMonochrom from Vienna is a worldwide operating collective dealing with technology, art, context hacking and philosophy and was founded in 1993. So to sum up, monochrom is an unpeculiar mixture of proto-aesthetic fringe work, pop attitude, subcultural science and
political activism. Their mission is conducted everywhere, but first and foremost in culture-archeological digs into the seats (and pockets) of ideology and entertainment.

monochrom released a leftist retro-gaming project, established a 1 baud semaphore line through the streets of San Francisco, started an illegal space race through Los Angeles, buried people alive in Vancouver, and cracked the hierarchies of the art system with The
Thomann Project. In Austria they ate blood sausages made from their own blood in order to criticize the grotesque neoliberal formation of the world economy. Sometimes they compose melancholic pop songs about dying media and host the first annual and inevitably leading festival concerned with cocktail robotics. At the moment they’re creating a conference series about sex and technology. Also they do international soul trade, propaganda camps, epic puppet theatre, aesthetic pregnancy counselling, food catering and — sorry to mention –modern dance.

monochrom’s Chicago gig will be a medley, a little tour-de-farce, a presentation of their projects and political motivation. A joyful bucket full of good clean fanaticism, crisis, language, culture, self-content, identity, utopia, mania and despair, condensed into the
well known cultural technique of a gala show. Powernapping highly welcome.

Cupcake Station: One

With fundraising going strong and the continuing bureaucracy of dotting our i’s and crossing our t’s when it comes to zoning issues and so forth, we’re at a newsworthy impass.

What you would only know by attending our meetings at the Mercury Café up until now is that like the true midwesterners most of us are, someones bound to make sure you don’t go hungry.  While vegan cupcakes were discussed at length when we were just getting off the ground, we’ve since seen myriads of cookies and banana bars offered up by our membership.  Heck, there’s even talk of starting an official cooking group.

Whether or not this can be considered blackmail and extortion, I’ll leave to the readers.  And no, membership dues can not be paid in baked goods.  Other treats gladly accepted include fudge, pies, chocolate nanotubes and streudel just as an example.
